Sales and business development represented a career change for me when I started 20+ years ago with little background and no training. With that in mind, I kept things simple and used one rule that has stayed with me my entire career: think from the other side of the phone. In other words, if someone approached me with a particular sales pitch, how would I respond? What would make me listen and spark an interest or curiosity in the product? The answers to those questions helped me to develop strong techniques and to create compelling pitches.

Working with an outsourced sales and business development organisation, we partnered with multiple types of industries including manufacturing, retail, medical and financial to name a few. This enabled me to gain insights and experience in a wide variety of industries both selling for and into, and which provided me with a unique perspective on sales and how to create strategies that work across industries. This, coupled with strong techniques and compelling pitches, led to a very successful career in sales.

Realising early on that I not only enjoyed the sales process and the challenge of the hunt but got equal pleasure out of helping my peers to succeed and learn new skills, prompted me to start the journey into management roles.
